Knowing When It's Time to Repaint Your Home's Exterior

Here is how you can tell you need to repaint your house.

There will come a time as a homeowner when you need to get your house repainted. It’s sometimes unclear how often your home’s exterior should be repainted, but there are indicators that you can use to determine when the time for repainting is near. Here is how you can tell you need to repaint your house.

Your Paint is Cracking, Bubbling, or Peeling

If you notice that your paint is cracking, bubbling, or peeling, you need to do something to combat the problem as soon as you can. Paint that peels off leaves your exterior exposed to all sorts of nasty weather conditions, which can result in long-lasting damage.

If you have wood that gets exposed to harsh weather conditions like snow or heavy rain, you could have to deal with rotting, mildew, or mold. You should repaint your home’s exterior whenever you notice any of these symptoms taking place.

You Have Cracked Caulking

Caulking is often found around the windows and doors of buildings, and it is used to keep them sealed up. If you see cracks forming in these spots, you can sometimes get those spots fixed by getting them filled up using new caulking. If the afflicted areas are left untreated, moisture will get inside the cracks and start causing greater damage.

If you see large cracks, the caulking definitely needs to be replaced. You’ll have to repaint the affected areas so that they get enough protection.

Moisture Stains & Mold

Moisture stains and mold may just be simple surface stains. If so, you should be able to wipe them away with ease with some elbow grease or a power washer. However, stains can sometimes indicate that you have more severe damage to analyze. Stains that you can’t remove on your own will likely be best to leave to a professional. A lot of stains just require that you paint over them. But, for greater damage, it might be necessary for you to get the material replaced.

Fading Colors

Exterior paint is likely going to fade once it’s spent enough time being exposed to all sorts of rough elements. Fading does more than make your home’s exterior look worse; it often means that your paint job doesn’t offer sufficient protection for the surface of the house. If you see that you have fading, you might want to repaint your house. Doing this adds more protection to your home and makes it look significantly better.
