How Can I Protect My Deck This Winter?

The temperature is dropping!

We’ve been waking up with the sun in our eyes these past few days, a welcome change from the dark mornings of fall. The time change means that the sun sets earlier, though, and the air will soon turn cold and brisk as we inch closer towards December. As you break out the wool sweaters consider taking some time to prepare your deck for the harsh winter months ahead.

Winter Cleaning

Before you do anything else, give your deck a thorough cleaning. A combination of foot traffic, food spills, pet damage, and weather take a toll on your deck during the warm months of summer and it’s important to erase these find memories before maintaining the surface for winter. These stains can potentially have a degrading effect on your deck that will only get worse as the temperature drops. If your deck needs a face-lift, consider stripping any faded or deteriorating finish prior to applying a water-repellent sealer or stain.

Fix Broken Boards

General maintenance is imperative for your deck to ensure that it will last for decades. During your cleaning process, check the entirety of your deck for any damages that have already occurred. Fix any broken boards or loose nails to make sure that your deck is strong enough to last through any heavy snow or harsh weather that comes with winter.

Protect Your Property

If you have patio furniture, potted plants, a grill, or other property on your deck, ensure it’s protected. Take down umbrellas and move the patio furniture to the garage or shed. Bring the potted plants closer to the house to keep them safe from low temperatures or high winds. Cover the grill with a weather-resistant cover so that damage doesn’t occur to your favorite steak machine!

Apply a Protective Finish

Apply a water-repellent finish to protect your deck against the damaging effects of the season. A finish will keep the materials safe from snow, sleet, and rain that can penetrate surfaces and potentially lead to rot or other damage.
