What to Consider Before a Deck Remodel

large wood deck that may be in need of a deck remodel

There comes a time in many deck owners’ lives when they’re trying to enjoy their outdoor space and something just feels off. Maybe the color has faded a bit too much, or there are one too many scuffs. Perhaps the gap between the floorboards has gotten a bit too wide over in the corner. Or maybe there’s simply a realization that the deck could be even better! Whatever the reason, the time may come when a deck remodel is in order.

Are you in this position? Whether your deck is in dire need of repairs or you want an upgrade, a deck renovation is in order. Take a look at everything you should know before making final decisions around materials, deck companies, and more.

Assessing the Condition of Your Deck

Before any renovations happen, it’s vital to take stock of the current state of your deck. Check for the following:

  • Wood rot
  • Loose or cracked boards
  • Rusted fasteners
  • Loose railings or stairs
  • Any other structural concerns

If your deck has minor issues—a few loose boards or a slightly loose section of railing, for example—some quick repairs to those areas will likely be sufficient. Extensive damage is an entirely different story, though. It could mean the necessity of a remodel, or even a full replacement.

Choosing Materials for Your Deck Remodel

Let’s say you’ve determined that a deck remodel is the best solution for you. What now? This is the time to consider what materials you want to use in your renovation. Be sure to consider everything from multiple angles—safety, function, and aesthetics. Let’s go over the common materials:

  • Wood: Offers that classic, natural look. It’s important to note, however, that this requires significant maintenance and is more susceptible to rot and insect damage than other options.
  • Composite: Made from plastic and recycled wood fibers, this option boasts low maintenance requirements and resistance to the elements.
  • PVC: Looking for resistance to moisture, insects, and rot? This may be the best choice for you!

When you’re trying to make your material selection for your deck renovation, keep in mind your location. Climates with a lot of humidity could sway you to go the PVC route thanks to its moisture resistance, for instance.

Planning Your Deck Remodel Design

This is where you can let your personal style shine through! Sure, this may be a renovation rather than a full replacement, but there’s plenty of room for some serious modifications. Your personal style and how you intend to utilize the space will be key drivers of your decisions here. This is what you should keep in mind:

  • Layout: How will foot traffic affect your deck? Will things get cluttered if you arrange furniture according to your vision? These are the drawbacks that are difficult to adapt to if they aren’t considered early enough in the process.
  • Railings: This is your chance to maximize safety while making some striking aesthetic decisions. What will your deck look like with metal railings? Wood? You can even consider glass panels for a sleek modern look!
  • Lighting: Built-in lighting can take your deck to the next level. Just imagine entertaining guests in the evening, surrounded by soft lighting fixtures that make for a pleasant get-together. Additionally, consider natural light. Will the position of the sun throughout the day inform your lighting decisions or where you place furniture?

Creating the outdoor oasis you’ve always wanted from an outdated deck can be tricky, but it’s far from impossible. With some careful planning in the design phase, you’ll be patting yourself on the back when it all comes together.

Budgeting for Your Deck Renovation

There are several factors that will influence the cost of your renovation—materials, size, labor expenses, and more. Here are a few guidelines for making sure the price doesn’t get out of hand:

  • Plan Carefully: Which features are essential, and which ones are optional? This will help you decide what to cut if need be.
  • Choose Materials Wisely: Composite decking may have an up-front cost that will give you pause, but once you consider the money saved over time, it’s not such a bad prospect.
  • Get Several Estimates: We can’t stress this enough! When you collect a fair number of quotes, you can effectively compare costs and make a decision that’s fair.

Research Deck Companies

There are plenty of deck companies out there, but which one will best serve the needs of your project? Be sure to vet every potential contractor, check online reviews, and view past projects of theirs.

  • Check Credentials: Are they licensed and insured?
  • Review Portfolios: Photographic records give a much clearer picture of a contractor’s skill sets.
  • Get a Detailed Contract: Ensure the contract is clear and detailed. It should include the scope of work, timeline, budget, and the materials to be used.

Permits and Regulations

Now for the fun part (just kidding). We know that making sure everything is “to code” and following all the rules isn’t the part of the project anyone looks forward to. That said, it’s a crucial part of any construction effort. It ensures the structure is safe for use, and safety should be the top priority of all contractors (deck companies included). That’s why it’s so important to comply with local regulations.

These codes dictate things such as railing height, baluster spacing, and the deck’s proximity to property lines. And if you fail to meet these regulations? Don’t be surprised if you’re faced with fines and required to redo the work.

The good news is that with Albaugh & Sons, you won’t have to worry about noncompliance. Making sure structures are up to code is part of our process, no matter the project. If you want to make sure everything is as it should be, working with us is a great way to do it!

Maintenance After Renovation

Once your deck remodel is complete, it’s important to maintain it. The materials you used in your project determine the frequency and steps of maintenance.

  • Wood Decks: Apply stain or sealant regularly to protect your deck from moisture and UV damage.
  • Composite and PVC Decks: Use a gentle soap and water solution to clean the surfaces and avoid staining.

No matter what materials you choose, it’s always a good idea to conduct inspections every season—and after harsh weather—to make sure everything is in great shape. This simple task could help your deck last quite a long time.

Ready to Renovate?

A deck renovation is a great investment for your home, whether you want to enhance your outdoor living experiences, raise the value of your home, or both. If you carefully inspect your deck, make materials choices that are right for you, and plan the design with safety and function in mind, it’s going to be a successful project. Above all, working with competent deck companies who know their stuff is crucial, and we’re confident in our abilities. Get in touch today, and let’s give you a deck remodel worthy of your vision!

So great to work with. Have had the pleasure of working with both sons who were knowledgeable and courteous. The entire process was easy from estimate to completion of my new deck. Both arrived on time, had my estimate for both deck and basement remodel in a couple of days. Danny, the project manager arrived on time and explained the plans, the work crew were amazing. Old deck demolished and beautiful new composite in its place in less than 2 days. Tiffany, the office manager is prompt in responding to all emails with courteous knowledgeable answers. They make you feel like you are their only customer. Look forward to working with them for my basement remodel. I 100% recommend this company.

We needed a fence as fast as possible for 5 rescue dogs that we took on. Albaugh and Sons was able to provide a great quote and a speedy installation. My wife and I love the new fence. It has literally improved our day to day lives by being able to let the dogs run free in the back. The materials were perfect and high quality. I hired Albaugh and Sons to tear out our old deck and replace it with a new composite deck/ screened porch. The front office was a pleasure to deal with and kept my wife and I informed on everything. The crew did an amazing job every step of the way. I was especially impressed with their finish work. The attention to detail was impressive! What I also liked Albaugh and Sons is they had a project manager (Danny) who would occasionally pop over and answer questions and would also keep me updated on progress. I would highly recommend hiring Albaugh and Sons for any of your fence/ deck / home improvement needs.
