When the cold weather looms on the horizon, we can simply walk inside and set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature. Our decks and fences can’t, though. They may be designed to withstand a certain degree of weather-related assaults, but that doesn’t mean deck maintenance (and fence maintenance, for that matter) isn’t necessary.
Winter prep is essential. It’s arguably the best form of fence and deck maintenance there is, as it’s a preventative measure that mitigates the risk of damage. With that in mind, here’s what can be done to ensure those outdoor structures can stand up to the cold this winter.
Step One: Inspect for Damage and Weak Points
A great first step to making sure your deck and fence are protected is inspecting for any existing damage. If you find any issues from the start, your fence and decking contractor will be able to make repairs promptly.
So what should you be paying attention to during an inspection?
- Deck Boards: Cracking, rot, or raised nails are all big fat red flags that need to be remedied.
- Fence Posts and Panels: Are the posts stable and secure? If not, they may not be able to withstand frost heave and strong winds.
- Hardware and Fasteners: Tighten any loose nails and screws so they don’t separate from the structure.
Step Two: Clean Thoroughly Before the Freeze
Time to get cleaning! In short, the less dirt and grime that’s on your fence and deck, the more resilient they’ll remain throughout the winter. Why? Because dirt, leaves, and other debris trap moisture, and trapped moisture can spell trouble in the long-term.
To remove these nuisances from your deck, use a mild detergent and a soft brush to remove any and all buildup on deck boards, railings, and other parts. You can also use a low-pressure power washer, but please be careful if you take this route, as you could damage the deck if the pressure isn’t low enough.
As for cleaning your fence, you can use the same methods we listed above. Additionally, however, it’s a good idea to clear soil, mulch, and other organic debris from the base of your fence posts.
Step Three: Seal, Stain, and Protect
Cleaning is done. Now it’s time to bolster your defenses! Once everything is squeaky clean (and dry), your fence and deck are ready for a crucial layer of protection. Be careful, though; the appropriate solution depends on your deck and fence materials:
- Wood: Reapplication of quality weatherproof sealants is in order, as it will reduce cracking and block moisture.
- Composite Materials: Clean and clear any gaps that may have debris. This is the main concern, as composite materials require little in the way of resealing. They do still benefit from seasonal care, though.
Step Four: Check Railings, Gates, and Stairs for Safety
Safety first! It always has been (and always will be) our number one priority, and we’re happy to preach it to our customers as well. You probably already know that fence and deck maintenance is a great way to increase safety, but how do you go about checking for these things, particularly in the context of winter?
- Railings: Are they sturdy enough to support not only people, but the extra weight from snow and ice?
- Gates: Ensure hinges and latches are free of rust and offer smooth operation.
- Stairs and Landings: Any uneven boards? Big gaps? Both of these present the potential for slips and falls.
Want to take safety to the next level? Here’s a pro tip: Add anti-slip treads or outdoor mats that provide maximum traction.
Step Five: Plan for Snow and Ice Management
In Maryland and the surrounding areas, the weather may be unpredictable, but we’re bound to see some snow and ice this winter. It’s how you plan to handle them that makes the difference.
Be sure to use the right tools. For example, plastic shovels are ideal over metal ones to avoid causing damage to your deck. When it comes to ice removal, be sure you’re using pet- and wood-safe de-icers that will “harm” the ice and only the ice. The big thing is to keep your deck as clear as possible of snow and ice to avoid water infiltration.
It’s also important to keep in mind that our region sees plenty of freeze-thaw cycles. If you don’t stay on top of things, they could cause warping in your deck and fencing.
